I had a chance to watch Bachna Ae Haseeno in INOX, Pune. It was my first experience watching a movie at a multiplex. Thanks to friends Anshul, Siddharth (NLA Pune) for helping. First of all coming to Multiplex experience - It was nice. I was happy to get the tickets easily without standing in long queue. Ticket cost us 120 each. Hall was very nice. But i really hated that crowd. I was not able to laugh out my heart as loud as i usually did in our desi theatres.

Coming to the film. I am in full praise for the screenplay writer. Why? i’l tell you later. Ok now coming to the film. Let me introduce you the film. The film narration is done by the hero of the film who stands on a beach and tells his story of experiences at different stages of his life.

There are three stages. The first stage in 1995 with Minissha Lamba. Minissha who is Mahi in the film is a young girl totally inspired by DDLJ, watched it 17 times and waiting for her “Raj” to come and embrace her life. Here i know, Aditya Chopra was very much instrumental in promoting his age old film. And again we have a scene recreating Dhoom. Oh man, Yash Rajs are so sick of promoting their old movies again. May be in a near future we can see a chow-chow movie with all the stars of Yash Raj banner recreating their old movies. Ok anyway things don’t look so artificial, since DDLJ was a phenomena those days, and girls even to present day tell those lines “aisa pehli baar hua hai satrah aTrah saalon mein. andhe kaa anjaana koi aane laga khwaabo mein.”

Now coming back to the stage one life of our hero … Uff re here Ranbeer is also Rajjjju! Raj and his friends are in switzerland trip and even Minissha and family are in switzerland. Both travelling in same train. Something similar to DDLJ happens. Minissha is very sure of DDLJ happening in her life very soon… By then she realises that her Raj was just a flirt. Stage one close.

Stage two.. Our hero again narrates what happened in 2002 in Mumbai. I liked the way the reels are used for different stages. They look quite similar to the age shown in the film. In this second stage, we have Bipasha, a small town girl coming to Mumbai to make it big in modelling field. Ranbeer and Bips are neighbours. First a fight turns to friendship and we have both living in the same room in live-in relationship.

I liked the way scenes transform and how the walls are broken. Very nice screenplay.. This is why i said about the screenplay writer. Here Ranbeer again leaves Bipasha and flies to Australia, while Bipasha waits for him at Sub Registrar’s office.

Now welcome to the stage 3 in 2005, Ranbeer in Australia. He and his video game freaks are big bosses at Microsoft games centre. Dont know how much Microsoft paid Yash Rajs. Somewhere i find similarity betweeen Yash Rajs and Microsoft - creating monopoly, back door marketing techniques, lock in techniques, trying to act too smart. Many more similarities i can find. Haa… Just think how Microsoft releases its OS and then releases patches in the name of Service Pack (so that we never realise that it was a mistake in them) This side, Yash Rajs first release DVDs and then release another version with those edited scenes and edited songs and behind the scenes… And very soon we may have “scenes that were censored by CBFC- only for international customers!”

Now in this third stage is that we find Ranbeer getting very serious about girls. Deepika is a taxi driver. Loves to be independent, doesnt depend on others, very intelligent. Unfortunately, Deepika rejects Ranbeer because she feels that marriage will end her freedom. Ranbeer is heart broken. What next, he sees Mahi (minissha), Bipasha passing in front of him. Now is the time when he feels the pain himself and decides to say sorry to both his old girls.

Now he goes to Punjab, sets right Minissha’s family and comes back to Bips. Bipasha is now a great model, without a minute to spare. Now very strict she is with everyone. When Ranbeer asks sorry, she asks him to work as her PA for some days and then he will get that sorry. She tests Ranbeer for a few days and finally, she grants him sorry.

Ranbeer returns to Australia to his old home. He is surprised to find letters piled up at his doorstep. Who wrote these letters? Oh yes was he fired by his Microsoft boss? Ok watch the film and get to know.

Musically speaking, i liked Aahistaa, title song and Khuda Jaane Ke. Even picturisation wise, these three songs are great. Aahista is my most favourite.

Performances:
Minissha is quite ok.. But she really looks pale and sick in her visual appearance. Ranbeer looks great in all three stages of his life and has acted very well. Bipasha as a model has done a neat job. Deepika as taxi driver only knows to smile and speak well and attract more customers . Deepika needs to learn some natural acting and improve her accents. Apart from these 4 characters, we find the character of the friend of Ranbeer who gives “killer” ideas to Ranbeer - he has done well.

I liked the camera work. As usual, high budget great cameras can be afforded by Yash Rajs. Editing at some places is innovative. For example, that coffee flow transforms into an elevator opening its door. Background score in fresh, we can hear the sound of fireworks, toilet flush sounds used very well.

What to say about direction.. its neat. But i will tell you, its the screenplay which is the real winner of the movie. The lady Devika Bhagat (who wrote Mr. & Mrs. Iyer) has managed to write a neat screenplay despite pressure from Yash Raj camp. Full claps for this lady. Film is packaged very well.. As usual like all Yash Raj Films.

Not a greaaaat film. But a good film. Watch it once or twice enjoy it. Nice lively jokes in first half as well as second half. Somewhere i felt that keeping 2 or 3 more characters could have improved the film.

Had been to Singh is Kinng film. Actually i read The Hindu review by Ziya Us Salam and went to this movie. Ziya Us wrote “a breezy entertainer”. But when the film ended, i felt it was not breezy but very tiring entertainer.

Coming to the film. The film starts with high tech action where one singh called “king” is targeted by a sharp shooter. At the end of this scene, this king singh lands in parachute and kills the shooter in a miraculous way. There itself i got doubts about this film. But i kept quiet. All this happens in Australia we are told.

Then the director takes us to Punjab where Akshay Kumar is busy catching the hen and making all sorts of damage to the village people and property. In the starting of the film, there is an announcement that the hen scene was shot using graphics and no violence was caused to the hen. But i could easily make out it was not at all graphics but truly picturised. But i felt no violence was made there. May be the producers at the time of going to censor board inserted the opening claim of usage of graphics to avoid any problem!

We have the first song shot in a marriage. The place of marriage is a rich green field with yellow flowers. But the song is too irritating to watch and hear. Akshay Kumar and Om Puri then reach Egypt instead of Australia and Akshay Kumar ends up meeting a sardarni Katrina Kaif and falls in love with her. Here one song “balle shaava” is quite entertaining not a problem to watch. Katrina pleases with her lively steps in her small pink skirt.

Then these two people Om Puri and Akshay Kumar reach Australia. Whatever is shown after this seems like a sheer bullshit. No logic, unbelievable stuff. The comedy is quite convincing. But at times comedy is incomprehensible as well as irritating.

The story moves on expected lines. Akshay Kumar meets Kiron Kher who gets him food. And Akshay Kumar wants to help her back in all ways possible. Kiron Kher’s daughter is returning back to Australia after her studies and as expected, we know it is none other than Katrina. Here starts the drama. A slight unexpected twist.

Then another silly twist when we realise Javed Jafferi is conspiring against his own brother. Mainly the idea of King (an underworld don) itself is silly. And the scenes of crying africans is so unrealistic. Director tries to show some humanitarian things but fails miserably. May be he needs to Watch Munna Bhai series and learn some techniques.

The film ends in a silly way again. And after the climax, all the singhs come back to Punjab which is shown very unclearly. There is one african rapper screaming something and in background, these people go back to Punjab. I am sure this director has targeted mainly the NRI crowd.

Nothing great in Music. teri oar teri oar was good but has been cut at half. No other songs impress. Javed Jafferi’s talent has been wasted. Nothing great for Katrina to show her “great acting skills”. And Akshay Kumar does his job well. But mainly the director has not done his job– applying a logical mind. I agree comedy need not have logic,.. But this film’s story has nothing in it. Camera work is rich and ok. No such great aesthetics in camera work except the fact that they have used high quality cinematography equipments.

To conclude, i can say this was a worst movie i watched recently. This film is the part of the kharaab films series of bollywood. These days bollywood is churning out only such waste films targeted mainly at NRI’s. Such films have overseas shooting, rap songs etc. It is better these films should be directly released in overseas and should not be shown in India at all.

Added: Sikhs were protesting against this film. After watching this film, i feel they should protest more. Because this film has shown singhs in a very silly way.

I happened to read John Grisham’s King of Torts. This is the first Grisham’s work i read. The starting of the novel is gripping and sticks us due to its suspense. But it is the chapters after half of the novel that really irritates. Same Tort lawyers, their toys, their food - these things are shown overly in the middle chapters. Had these things not been shown excessively, the 500 odd pages book could have been reduced by a hundred pages for sure.

The novel is about a rookie Clay Carter who works for OPD (office of public defense). Working under a boss Glenda, the money he earns is not enough for his life. Then he meets a person Tequila watson in a drug abuse and murder case. As he works into the case, fortune knocks his door. Who knocks the door, and how the fortune goes away as soon. In thew whole novel, the working of mass tort litigations in USA is shown well. Nice novel. Still more to write. will continue some other day.

Jaane Tu Jaane Na is nothing but an old story of boy and girl being cloooose friends and despite ignorant of “something” between them. And finally realizing “that” something in absence of each other.

The film’s title card is done innovatively. The title card video is shot in Mumbai’s Marine Drive area in a slow shutter painting type of video. We can notice several delicate moments in this title card video.

The film stars off with a group of friends driving into the airport and waiting for their other friends who are about to arrive from some place. One of the boy in the team has brought his girl in order to introduce his friends to her. She is totally a girl without any emotions, no taste in anything.

To keep her entertained, the friends start narrating a story. This narration which seems like a imagined one turns out to be the plot of the film.

All the friends in the team harmoniously narrate the story. The film moves into the story and again back to the airport. This is the most innovative thing about the screenplay.
It takes about 15 minutes for us to get into the main plot of the film. The next part is not all boring.

When we thought it was another love story inside the campus.. oh no there is already the farewell party! There we have the song “pappu cant dance”. The friends cannot believe that their college days are over. Especially Jai (Imran Khan) and Aditi (Genelia D’Souza) are still glued to each other.

As we enter the world of these friends, we have the song “kabhi kabhi aditi” which is shot well inside the campus and Aamir Khan makes a guest appearance as street vendor.

Now let us know about the main characters in the film. I can say almost all the characters have a job and make an impact on our mind. As we know from the pre release publicity, that Jai is a non violent guy, and Aditi a talkative fighting girl. Aditi wants only Jai to call her Meoww (yes the cat sound), and Aditi doesn’t want anyone other than her calling Jai as Rats.

Then we have a list of characters who make an impact in the film like — The “pappu” of pappu cant dance sala song, the police officer (Paresh Rawal), mom of Jai, brother of Aditi, Khan brothers (guest appearance).

I don’t know the names of other supporting cast. Each and every person in the friends’ team has acted with full confidence and the characterization of each one is done well.

The first half and the second half partially is filled with fun. Specially the song picnic song on lorry and on the dry grass lands and water. Very well shot song. Specially the simple choreography in one single shot where camera moves around all the characters.

The use of handycam and use of handycam type of video filter in some scenes makes us recall the similar scenes in Rang De Basanti.

Parents of Aditi arrange for marriage between the both, but both are confident enough to say they are close friends and nothing else. Then the friends decide to search life partner for each other. Aditi finds a girl for Jai and Aditi finds her boy who is her father’s son.

The film is a bit irritating after this point, as we all know the same old story. It becomes irritating at a point when both Aditi and Jai are engaged with their respective partners. I think this part which needed a better treatment. But the film doesn’t turn out to be tear bringer with over emotions.

As we reach the climax, we have the “Rathore” family story in a thicker way. Nice idea by the screenplay writer to introduce some new element to the old story. There is a formula type of 3 essentials acts to be performed by each member of Rathore family to become a man. And we keep expecting the performance of these three acts.

And there we have Jai Singh Rathore riding a horse in the middle of the night (thanks to transport strike). The last few minutes of the climax are filled with our hero breaking the airport security in order to stop his girl going to New York.

The final scene of the climax (of the story!) ends with our hero fallen on the floor and his body targeted by the guns of the security people. And Jai screams “meow” — strange enough for the police to suspect him as a terrorist. And meow aditi turns back, runs and hugs Jai on the floor! A new type of hug on the floor unlike the usual hugs.

There ends the story. We come back to the gang of friends waiting at the airport. And the friends for whom they were waiting arrive and they both are none other than Aditi and Jai!

Imran Khan does his role well. Genelia wins with her cuuuuuute looks and cuuuute smile but not so impacting performance. Seems like her voice was dubbed by some other person.

The main plus point is the brilliant performances by all the members in the friends gang. Not one or two.. but all.

Coming to the music, kabhi kabhi aditi, Pappu cant dance, Dil Kabhi banda songs stays in mind. The other 2 songs come and fit the sequence but do not register in our minds immediately. AR Rahman should have tried to give one better sad song. The new singers sound great and as fresh as the cast youth.

Camera work is flawless and good lighting at several places like the scenes inside the car, pappu cant dance song. The lighting is more of yellowish in most scenes. The camera man has shown his talent when he revolves the camera from the shadow part of the building to the sunny part of the building for the lines “lekin raath ke baad hi savera hota hai”. And the song “dil kabhi banda” is also shot well. The whole set of airport scenes are shot in low lights and the sudden movements give a sort of dynamism to the story itself.

Yes an old story, wins due to the new narration style. A perfectly made story for introducing the new boy Imran Khan. His character is made like that of a normal guy and nothing special. Imran’s character is never given more importance and all the characters have their own identity. The film is watchable due to the brilliant performances by all the artists, fresh narration, melodious music, and quite entertaining stuff.

Somehow today after a gap, i’m posting so many things on blog. And add this. This is the photo of a flower called Brahma Kamala. It blossoms its flowers only once in a year or so. It blossoms only in night time with some pleasant smell. Today night the brahma kamala plant in my home blossomed threee flowers. Here is the fresh photo taken just an hour ago.

All the three together.

And the single photo. Want high resolution version of this above photo? Click here. The full resolution you can see the details of the flower, petals and inside parts. I remember studying something about the inside parts of the flower like some stigma, style, pedicel, microsporangium. Now i don’t know what these names stand for. Yes you can observe all these parts in the high resolution photo.
