Jab we met- ek dum mast!!

When i saw the trailors of jab we met, i felt it was nothing but a copy or inspiration of DDLJ. Because seeing shahid and kareena getting into the train, punjab etc, i felt this was one of those waste bollywood films to be. Film released without any over hype. I thought it would do below average business.

jab we met on bus

But after some days i realised that the film was really doing well and positive reviews from all sides. Yet i was not interested to watch the film. Mainly i got irritated seeing kareenaa’s over acting scenes. The day after it was broadcast on tv, most of my friends were asking me- “dint u watch it? it was nice”.

Then i thought of watching it. Finally got the moser baer vcd of this film. I watched it at one go. I felt it was not at all a two and half hour movie. it was like some half an hour movie. So swift is the film!

The starting of the film is unlcear, yet we wont feel bored. As shahid and kareena meet and travel, the story unfolds. I think bollywood has got a talented writer-director Imtiaz Ali. When i was feeling that bollywood was full of waste directors, here is a talented man.

Imtiaz has done the script work very neatly. What is amazing is that he creates moments in first half which are repeated in the second half of the movie in a similar way. For example, in first half Kareena tells shahid to burn the photo of his ex-wife and he feels relaxed. In second half shahid asks kareena to scold her boyfriend. Like this, there are many repeated scenes which makes us recall things.

The mood of the film is a mixture of seriousness, fun and nostalgia. And the film is nowhere boring. Imtiaz has created such wonderful moments. Songs are picturised well. That song “mauja mauja” was one not necessary. But other songs like “naa hai yeh paana”, “hum jo chalne lage” have been well picturised with good moments in it. In “naa hai yeh” song, its nice to see shahid and kareena dancing in office, while the bright office turns dark, and both dancing in rain.

And let me tell you, the locales selected are very nice, though they dint go for phaareeen locations. Punjab scenes are rich green and we feel like smelling that soil. I feel Punjab is one nice hara-bhara state in India. Their green fields, rich soil, agriculture, watering. Then the Manali scenes are cool. “yeh ishq haaye” song introduces us to the ice beds on either sides of the roads. And those high mountains, clouds, small houses, very nice.

So much to say about this films. That too about many of those wonderful scenes. I found nothing useless or negative points till now. That scene where kareena asks how she looks and suddenly she says her sister also looks similar and shahid can elope with her. And kareena always thinking of eloping and over enthusiastic was not irritating to me as when i watched the trailers.

The hotel decent scene is also nice. When they bargain for 1 hour, 2 hours… kareena is totally unaware, and hotel manager is thinking the other way. And we can see how the serious shahid step by step starts becoming kareena type by making fun in between. Then that scene where kareenahugs up shahid naturally and later feels bad, this is nice. And nice dialogue shahid says “socho mat, kabhie kabhie ho jaata hai aise.” Many other scenes are there which are worth mentioning. But im not getting them in my mind. May be i will watch the movie again and make another post on the best scenes of the film.

“aao ke jab tum piyaa” song is a heart moving song which takes the story along it. And i feel all songs come and fit into the situations so well. Now coming to performance, kareena and shahid have done a great job. Kareena is too good in her acting, and body language also.

And other supporting cast are also good. But the story mainly revolves around shahid kareena. And other characters just come and go. Music by pritham i like naa hai yeh and hum jo chalne lage and other songs are also good.

And regarding camera work, it is simple, nice and precise. And i want to tell about the lyrics. Some newcomer Irshad Kamil. It took some time for me to understand some lyrics. And some lyrics to remember:

hum jo chalne lage
chalne lage hai yeh raaste
haa haa manzil se behtar lagne lage hai yeh raaste

Na Hai Yeh Pana
Na Khona Hi Hai
Tera Na Hona Jane

Kyun Hona Hi Hai
tum se hi din hota hai
sur wahi shyaam aati hai

tum se hi tum se hi
har ghadi saas aati hai
zindagi kehlaati hai tum se hi

Aankhon Mein Ankhne Teri
Bahoon Mein Baahein Teri
Mera Na Mujhe Mein Kuch Raha Hua Kya
Baaton Mein Baatein Teri
Raatein Saugatein Teri
Kyun Tera Sab Yeh Ho Gaya
Hua Kya
Mein Kahin Bhi Jata Hoon
Tumse Hi Mil Jata Hoon
Tumse Hi Tumse Hi

Shoor Mein Khamoshi Hai
Thodi Se Behoshi Hai

Chode Na Chote Kabhi
Tode Na Tute Kabhi

Jo Dhaga Tumse Jud Gaya Wafa Ka
Tum Se Hi Tum Se Hi

i dint get what this means:
aadha sa waada kabhi
aadhe se zyaada kabhie..

As said by a critic, its indeed “shahid-kareena’s DDLJ”.
And ‘tum se hi’ sung by Mohit Chauhan is outstanding !

    Hello There;

I agree with your review of the movie. I was discouraged by the funny sounding name and I did not care to watch the movie during my last visit to India. But later, I borrowed (and eventually purchased) the CD from a friend. I was surprised to see a bollywood movie with sense and logic and fun. Best of all without any violence and use of four-letter words.

Kareena has now proved that she can act. Her acting as depressed girl in the second half is superb, to say the least. The scenes when Adi meets her at the entrance of Womens’ Hostel and later at the hotel are very powerful and touching.

    Krishna
